About the Left Turn Legion Legends
Left Turn Legion Legends started as a tailgate at the Indianapolis 500 in 2010. It began as a group of friends tailgating at The Greatest Spectacle in Racing. The tailgate grew every year with more people and soon we began to get donations of food and beverage.
We decided to start giving back and collecting monetary donations for a veterans’ organization each year as part of the Memorial Day Weekend celebration.
Agenda 2022
The schedule is packed with fun; however, do not feel obligated to join every “excursion”. “Relaxing” next to Legend’s Bar is always a popular choice!
25 May – Wednesday: Arrive at American Legion – Set Up Campsite
- 1926 Georgetown Rd. Speedway, IN 46224
- We are up front in lots 9-11.
26 May – Thursday: Finish setting up / Main Street Pub Crawl / Pickle Peddler Downtown Indy Bike Bash Tour
- 1200: Lunch
- 2:00: Main Street Pub Crawl (Speedway)
- 6:00: Dinner
- 8:00: Pickle Peddler – Limited seating must be signed up and paid before hand
27 May – Friday: (Legend’s Bar opens at 7:00am) INDY 500 CARB DAY!
8:00am – 6:00pm – It’s racing. It’s rock and roll. It’s the ultimate turbo boost into the greatest weekend in racing. It’s Miller Lite Carb Day, Friday, May 24! This high-powered party features the final practice for the 106th Indianapolis 500, the Indy 500 Pit Stop Competition, and Grammy Award winner Rick Springfield (Jessie’s Girl). Morris Day and the Time will open followed by Springfield and Kings Of Chaos. Concert is located in Turn 3 (See map under “additional info” below).
Cost is a Carb Day ticket $30.00. You may upgrade your experience…..$20.00 for a PIT ticket or $250.00 for VIP Deck Ticket (Includes good seats, light food options, and 2 drink tickets).
27 May – Annual Friday Evening Chairman’s Dinner at O’REILLY’S Irish Pub 7:30pm sharp
1552 Main St, Speedway, IN. – Just a short stroll from the campsite, this always jumpstarts the weekend! The Chairman will welcome new Legion Members and share stories with current members. Food, fun, live music, and laughs before heading back to the Legend’s Tailgate for more shenanigans! Cost is your food and bar tab.
Legend’s Tip: Don’t skip out on your tab…
28 May – Saturday– (Legend’s Bar Opens at 7:00am) Legend’s Day/Breakfast Club/Saturday Fowling Tournament
Breakfast Club/Bar Opens
This year we are bringing a tradition from Good Old Purdue University, BREAKFAST CLUB. This means you need to show up in costume. Technically it means you need to be ready to drink starting at 7:00 am when the bar opens. Find a costume to wear for the day. Some of our more advanced member like to have a few costume changes throughout the day.
Fowling Tournament
This is not the official tournament that happens down in the coke lot, but a more local event for those in our tailgate and our neighbors. This is a wonderful tailgate game that crosses Football, Bowling and Drinking. Everyone thinks they are a High School Quarterback, but few are. Can you prove your worth.
Dinner
Dinner will consist of Spaghetti and Lasagna from the best Italian restaurant in town! Continue washing your sorrows away after your failed Fowling attempt and enjoy people watching later in the evening via the camp fire pit (propane only). Georgetown is no Bourbon Street, but there will be plenty of Bourbon.
Drink cautiously or be aware of the ghost of Florence Henderson! Legend’s Bar opens Sunday morning at 6am!
29 May – (Legend’s Bar opens at 6:00am) The 106th Running of the Indy 500 – Yes, we will have coffee…and Bloodies and Screwdrivers and Beer!
Thirty-three drivers. 200 laps. 500 miles. One bottle of cold milk. The only thing missing from this magical Indianapolis 500 mix is you. Don’t miss out on another incredible edition of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” This is a fun day but a long day. Pace yourself so you don’t crash…see what I did there? Look out for such challenges as beer pong, local cornhole, bags games, drawing drivers, or good ole fashion drankin until we make our way over for the start of the race. You don’t want to miss these festivities. It is a great celebration and remembrance of the brave warriors who fought for our freedom. After the starting festivities, it’s down to business.
- 6:00 am – Legend’s Bar Opens!
- 8:00 am – Lincoln Square Pancake House sponsored burritos, which I STRONGLY recommend. If the Bourbon is kickin Saturday night, which, if history proves correct, it may be…then we will walk 50 steps and grab breakfast in the American Legion.
- 10:50 am – Head over to the track to grab our seats. Be sure to have your cooler packed!
- 12:30 pm – Start of the Indy 500!

ENTER COKE LOT AT YOUR OWN RISK! Hahah. See videos in the links above. It’s worth a walk down to 25th and Georgetown to see this “tradition”. You may get stopped by land owners who figured out how to make an extra buck by requiring wrist bands in the lot. They were 10.00 last year, but thanks to Joe and the VP…they have probably gone up.
Legend’s Tip: Carry about 50.00 in cash on you. If you get mugged, it’s not a huge deal (no muggings have occurred in 12 straight years of doing this).
Traveling from out of Town:
- We have Legend’s coming from Indiana, Virginia, Florida, Washington State, and California!
- If you are coming from out of town, you will be flying into the Indy Intl Airport.
- An UBER to The American Legion Post 500 at the TRACK is required! As you can imagine, no one will be “available” to pick you up or drop you off.
- Cost: 15.00 one way
Packing List:
- Sunglasses, Sunglasses, Sunglasses
- Packable Cooler: Coolers must not exceed 18 inches by 14 inches by 14 inches. If it does not meet this requirement, you will be asked to walk the oversized cooler back to the tailgate. Glass containers are not allowed.
- Hat or visor
- Change of clothes: Bring shorts and one pair of jeans. It usually rains at least one day of the weekend and some nights can get cool.

- Legends Tip: Do not over pack. If you remember one thing…hydration powder.
This Year’s T-Shirt
The Left Turn Legion Legends 2022 Tailgate t-shirt is show below. This is just a mock up so the final product might vary. You don’t want to miss out on this one of a kind collectors item. All the cool kids will be wearing them at the track. Proceeds will be donated to our charity Indy Honor Flight.
